WELCOME NOTE

It is a pleasure to welcome you to our organization Together Against Impunity in Great Lakes Region (TAI/GLR). This is a non-profit making and non-governmental organization that came to existence as a brainchild of Mr. Alphonse Muleefu. This website is desitgned to alert you about our objectives and activities. TAI/GLR has a primary goal of promoting victims' rights through Legal Research, Trainings, Monitoring Criminal Proceedings, Lobby and Advocacy, Seminars, Conferences, study tours, Drama Show competitions and Moot Court Competitions for the development of strong National and Regional Legal Institutions that respect the Rule of Law.

TAI/GLR considers victims' right to receive due course in criminal justice as a fundamental right as provided in the United Nations: Declaration of basic principles of justice for victims of crime and abuse of power. Therefore, to deter incresead gross human rights violations and abuse of power; our organization gives the first priority to the development of International Criminal Law and International Humanitarian Law as alternative approach to supplement domestic law. Please, we argue you to consider supporting our mission and help us expand our campaign.

Know your rights as a victim of crime:



* Access to Justice and fair treatment *
You have a right to report the crime to police.You should be treated with compassion, fairness and with respect to your dignity and privacy.You have the right to directly take the case to court when a period of six months elapsed without any action being taken by the prosecution.
* Access to Information *
You have the right to be informed of the needed practical assistance, available relevant victims’ service providers (agencies) and any other earliest opportunities you can benefit. You have a right to offer and receive information from the police and or the prosecution related to the investigation of the crime and prosecution of the offender. You have a right to be informed of the trial process and your role as a witness.
* Protection *
You have the right to be protected from intimidation, harassment, retaliation, bribery, and corruption; you should report such incidents to police or prosecution.
* Assistance *
You have a right to request for available, trauma counseling, legal assistance and any other social service responsive to your special needs depending on the nature of the harm inflicted.
* Compensation *
You have a right to request for compensation from the offender for sustained bodily or mental injury.You can file a civil action against principle offenders, their accomplices and accessories as well as against those liable to pay their damages [e.g. parents/guardians in case a crime was committed by a minor child] and their successors to the estates of the offenders.
* Restitution *
You have the right to request for the return of your unlawfully dispossessed goods or properties, or those held by the state for the purpose of investigation or evidence, or request for the payment of the loss or damage made in order to restore the position you were in prior to the commission of the crime.

24 November 2011 : Together Against Impunity in the Great Lakes Region (TAI/GLR) – Rwanda, is planning to organize a second one week long study tour on Transitional Justice mechanisms adopted in Rwanda after the 1994 genocide from 15th – 21th July, 2012.
